Identity theft. A bill (S. 153) introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (DCA) that would increase penalties for those who commit identity theft has been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee and has been taken up by the House of Representatives.

Under the bill, those convicted of knowingly transferring, possessing, or using another person's identity to commit a felony--such as a theft from an employee benefit plan or immigration fraud--could be punished by up to two years in prison. Those using another's identity to commit a felony related to a terrorist act would face five years in prison. The bill prohibits those convicted of these offenses from being placed on probation, being given a reduced sentence, or serving concurrent terms.
