Twelve airports, including The Miami International Airport, have joined with the Transportation Security Administration and the U.S. Postal Service on a pilot program that uses explosive detection dogs to screen mail in an effort to get mail weighing 16 ounces or more back on commercial airplanes. This common practice was suspended after 9-11 due to the potential threat to airline security.
The program uses canines to screen mail because the dogs combine mobility with reliable detection rates. Beyond initial and weekly training, each team is also required to recertify every year. The project is expected to expand to all major airports by the end of the year.
