Road warriors wandering a trade show with laptop in hand may relish the convenience of being able to connect to a wireless network to get e-mail or surf the Web. But some new hacker tricks that provide open access to the files on their laptops may wound these warriors.
Wireless security firm AirDefense routinely monitors trade shows to see how many users are trying to connect to wireless networks and if they are using security technologies such as encryption or virtual private networks. At one recent show dedicated to communication service providers and private network managers, AirDefense found evidence of hijacked connections and dozens of attendees using wireless scanning programs or devices.
