Registration of pearl millet parental line TIFT 454.(Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station)

The USDA-ARS and the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton, GA, cooperatively developed and released in December 2003 pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] parental line Tift 454 (Reg. no. PL-46, PI 638789). Tift 454 is used as a male fertility restoration pollinator on Tiff 99D2AI to produce the grain hybrid TifGrain 102. Grain yields for TifGrain 102 ranged from 4000 to 6000 kg [ha.sup.-1] in Georgia.

Tiff 454 was derived from a pollen shedding plant (2n = 2x = 14) selected from among 111 pearl millet plants in 1980 from a Tift 23 [D.sub.2][A.sub.1] [cytoplasmic-nuclear male sterile (cms) pearl millet] x MN23 [2n = 6x = 42 pearl millet x napiergrass (P. purpureum Schumach.)] interspecific hybrid cross (Hanna, 1990).
