This special issue is based on the papers that were presented at the festschrift to mark the retirement of Professor Duncan Waterson from the chair of Modern History at Macquarie University. The festschrift was held at the Blackfriars campus of the University of Technology, Sydney, in February 2001.

Duncan Bruce Waterson was born in Matamata, New Zealand, on 14 April 1935. Educated at Matamata College and Auckland University College, he graduated in 1959 with an MA Honours (First Class). Supervised by Professor R W Chapman, Duncan's thesis, `Railways and Politics, 1908-1928: A Study in the Politics of Development in a Twentieth-Century Social Democracy', earned him a prize from the Faculty of Arts for the most outstanding graduate student.
