One of the nice things about the recent Jared Paul Stern controversy-in which the former New York Post "Page Six'' gossip columnist was accused of attempting to extort protection money (protection against nasty items) from billionaire Ron Burkle-is that it opened up a sort of Pandora's box. Competitive news organizations (The New York Times and the Daily News chief among them) spent weeks and thousands of words gleefully dissecting the big business of "Page Six'' gossip, and suddenly everyone was in on all the dirty secrets behind the dirty-secrets racket.
