Measured ad spending rose 3.4% in August and 3.7% year to date, according to TNS Media Intelligence. Ad spending is growing slightly faster than the economy; real GDP growth averaged 3.3% in the first three quarters.

Yahoo hit a two-year low last month on weak Q3 results, but it got a boost Oct. 30 when Merrill Lynch upgraded it to "buy." The brokerage cited "now-underappreciated assets"-largest global user base, higher video stream share than YouTube, upside of a new ad platform. Merrill's analyst reiterated his view that Yahoo (enterprise value1: $35 B) could be a compelling acquisition for Microsoft-or "a large media conglomerate."
