For a big time tire designer, Heo Min Soo doesn't seem to get out much.

The 33-year-old assistant manager on Hankook Tire Co. Ltd.'s LTR Development Team recently became the proud daddy of the new Dynapro ATm RF10 light truck tire, which the South Korea-based company touted for its "premier'' off-the-road capabilities. But in what has to be a twist of irony, Mr. Soo's first crack at off-road driving came on a visit to the desert area of scrub brush-, juniper- and black oak-covered mountains that ring the Big Bear Lake ski resort area.

It was a rocky introduction, to say the least, to the features he designed into the tire without ever getting out of the company's Daejeon, South Korea, research and development...
