Conti picks Hefei site for first China tire plant

HANOVER, Germany-Continental A.G. has selected a site in Hefei, China, for its first tire plant in that nation, ending a several-year search for a factory there.

Conti has budgeted $216 million to build the passenger and light truck tire plant, with construction to begin in mid-2008 and production to start early in 2010, the firm said.

Conti intends to make premium Continental brand tires at the site, which will have an annual capacity of 4 million tires destined for domestic distribution.

The decision follows by a few months Conti's opening a 64,560-sq.-ft. tire distribution center in Shanghai to service the Chinese market. The center can accommodate up to 80,000 passenger and truck...
