The typical retail outlet operated by North America's 100 largest independent dealerships got slightly larger last year, and the revenue mix shifted measurably in favor of automotive service.

The typical retail tire outlet generated $2.34 million in sales, split 51/43/6 among tires, automotive service and other sources. The automotive service percentage was up three percentage points and tire sales down four points, according to an analysis of data submitted for the annual ranking.

The 100 dealerships ranked this year by Tire Business operated 5,118 outlets as of early October, up a net of 229 (308 new vs. 79 closed or sold) from the total operated by the 107 dealerships in last year's rankings. That puts the average...
