The meaning of the term "classification" varies with the speaker. For example, Gordon (1999) uses "classification" as a synonym for "clustering." Duda, Hart, and Stork (DHS) use "classification" in the broader sense of "pattern recognition." DHS define "pattern recognition" as "the act of taking in raw data and taking an action based on the category of the pattern." This includes both supervised learning (e.g., discriminant analysis) and unsupervised learning (e.g., clustering).
