* The Italian packaging firm Alcas made a big splash last month at the MIG International Ice Cream Exhibition in Belluno, Italy last month with its new line of natural ice cream cups and containers made from Dow Cargill's corn-based plastic NatureWorks PLA. The 02 line takes its name from the formula 'zero consumption x zero waste,' which refers to the reduced environmental impact of the containers.

Cargill takes carbon and other elements found in corn starch to make the plastic, called polylactide (PLA), through a process of fermentation, separation, and polymerization.
