The House and Senate Democratic leadership has put forward a Six in '06 list of priorities that includes energy independence as a key element. This will involve rolling back certain federal tax benefits for the oil and gas industry and increasing spending on renewable energy resources, energy efficiency, and biofuels such as ethanol.

With Democrats poised to become the majority in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate in January 2007, they will, for the first time in over a decade, have control of the congressional agenda. This means Democrats will get to decide what goes before the committees and what gets sent to the House floor for a vote.
