K-12 schools and institutions of higher education should take steps to protect their networks from potential hacking -- by terrorists or others --through a few simple fixes, government experts said.
Many computer users open the door for hackers by installing flawed software, which often contains features unnecessary for the normal use of a computer. A government computer security agency recommends that Windows XP users consider turning off XP's universal plug-and-play (UPnP) service to close a security hole that can allow hackers to break into hard drives.
The recommendation, which follows a patch offered last month by Microsoft Corp., is posted on the Web site of the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC): www.nipc.gov/warnings...
