Black sells his half to the Aspers and right-wing daily journalism appears doomed

Toronto Sun emeritus editor Peter Worthington, a long-time friend of this magazine, says, "Nobody's sticking their necks out, except the National Post and you guys. The rest of the media has pretty much surrendered the battlefield." An hour later, journalist Mark Steyn calls with shocking news--Conrad Black has sold his 50% of the Post to CanWest Global's Asper family. "Your magazine is now the last independent voice in Canada," he says. All very flattering, of course, but the Asper takeover is further evidence of what Mr. Steyn has described as "our one-party state decaying into a one-paper state."
