Labs Hope to Speed HIF Development With 'Virtual Laboratory' Creation.(Brief Article)

Three Department of Energy laboratories hope to speed up development of heavy ion fusion (HIF) technologies with the creation of a computer-based virtual laboratory.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have signed a memorandum of agreement creating the Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory (HIF-VNL).

Heavy ion fusion involves the use of heavy ions to heat and compress a target consisting of deuterium and tritium in order to produce energy.
