CISCO DEFENDS STRONG LEAD IN L2-L3 ETHERNET SWITCH MARKET.

Worldwide layer 2 and layer 3 Ethernet switch ports increased 11% and revenue increased 16% to $3.6 billion between 4Q03 and 1Q04, according to Infonetics Research's quarterly market share and forecast service, L2-L3 Ethernet Switches. Continued strong demand for 1G products offset the decline in 100M chassis products.

Vendors report that end-users are increasing their spending on network infrastructure at moderate levels, which is expected to accelerate throughout 2004, then taper off from 2005 to 2007. The increased enterprise spending is being driven by the need to replace aging pre-Y2K equipment and by a migration from a large installed base of 100M Ethernet switches (fixed and chassis) to 1G and 10G speeds.
