In a move that underscores the importance of the right platform to support today's dynamic, Web-based applications, Galileo International, Santa, Clara, Calif., a provider of electronic global distribution services (GDS) for the travel industry, has selected Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ:SUNW) as the processor solution provider for the company's newly revamped, industry-leading GlobalFares(TM) airfare-pricing system. Replacing part of its mainframe systems with Sun Fire(TM) 6800 servers and the Solaris(TM) 8 Operating Environment has helped Galileo reduce its total cost of ownership by 30 percent and is expected to save the company tens of millions of dollars in hardware maintenance and programming costs.
