Student portfolio Web sites: valuable communication aids to future employers

Review of Business, Spring, 2008 by Patrick J. Lyons

* First, the student drags and drops three wordprocessed documents from other folders on his or her PC to his/her working copy of the port folder located in his/her Mgt4322 folder.

* Next, the student uses Microsoft Word to modify his/her Web site navigation page for the wordprocessed documents. This file is named WordproDocs.htm.

* To do this, the student opens WordproDocs.htm in Microsoft Word. For each document, the student creates a short title followed by a concise evocative description 25 to 100 words in length. Then, for each document, the student creates a hyperlink for the document by

* selecting the document title,

* clicking on the Insert menu and the Hyperlink ... option,

* clicking on the file name the student wishes to link to and

* clicking OK.

* Lastly, the student uses Microsoft Internet Explorer with ftp://stupub.stjohns.edu/ to drag and drop his/her modified copy of the entire port folder from his/her Mgt4322 folder to his/her stupub Web site. This copies all the wordprocessed documents and the updated WordproDocs.htm file.

Portfolio Exercise III - Add Workbook. In the third exercise, workbooks are added in a fashion similar to that for the wordprocessed documents.

* The student drags and drops three Excel workbooks from other folders on his/her PC to his/her working copy of the port folder.

* Next, the student uses Microsoft Word to modify his/her Web site navigation page for the Excel workbooks with the same procedure in Exercise II above. This file is named Workbooks.htm.

* Lastly, the student uses Microsoft Internet Explorer with ftp://stupub.stjohns.edu/ to drag and drop his/her modified copy of the entire port folder from his/her Mgt4322 folder to his/her stupub Web site. This will copy all the workbooks and the updated Workbooks.htm file.

Portfolio Exercise IV - Add Showcase and Homepage Text. In the fourth exercise, the student's three best work pieces are added to the Web site. To do this:

* The student drags and drops his/her three best work pieces from other folders on his/her PC to his/her working copy of the port folder located in his/her Mgt4322 folder. These work pieces may be duplicates of wordprocessed documents and/or workbooks included in Exercise II and III. If so, it is not necessary to recopy them.

* Next, the student uses Microsoft Word to modify his/her Web site navigation page for the Showcase with the same procedure in Exercise II above. This file is named Showcase.htm.

* Next, the student uses Microsoft Word to personalize the introduction, passion, short term career tactic and long term career strategy on his/her homepage. These statements are made to be consistent with the results of his/her Career Exercises. Essentially, the introduction states the student's college and major. the passion summarizes what makes the student tick, the short term career tactic expresses the students current approach to fulfilling his/her career plans, while the long term career strategy identifies his/her future path. Several examples will be given in the next section.
