Ford & GM to Require ISO 14001 for Suppliers.(Brief Article)

Ford and General Motors have mandated that all their suppliers become certified to the ISO 14001 environmental standard in the next three years. ISO 14001 is a companion to the ISO 9000 quality standards of the International Standards Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO 14001 requires a company to have a proactive environmental management system to monitor its performance with regard to factors such as effluents, emissions, hazardous waste, recycling, waste minimization, water use, etc.

Ford is requiring suppliers to certify at least one manufacturing site to ISO 14001 by the end of 2001, and all manufacturing sites shipping products to Ford by mid2003. GM is requiring all suppliers to certify by the end of 2002.
