New barrier resin for multi-layer PET bottles. (Keeping Up With: Blow Molding).(Kureha Chemical Industry Company Ltd. resin product information)(Brief Article)

Plastics Technology, July, 2002

Early tests show that a novel polyester provides 10-fold greater oxygen barrier to multi-layer PET bottles than does MXD6 amorphous nylon. This developmental polyglycolic acid (PGA) resin comes from Kureha Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. in Japan. Unlike EVOH, PGA reportedly does not suffer a dramatic fall-off in barrier performance under high humidity.

Compared with other barrier resins, PGA's melting point is closer to that of PET. Kureha officials say this simplifies coinjection of bottle preforms, resulting in faster cycles and improved quality. The company has test-run PGA successfully on both one-stage and two-stage (reheat) stretch-blow equipment. Kureha's U.S. office is Kreha Corp. of America, N.Y.C. Tel: (212) 867-7040.
