Glass-filled ABS/nylon debuts in car interiors.(KEEPING UP WITH: Materials)

Plastics Technology, December, 2006

BASF AG in Germany developed its first glass-filled grades of Terblend N ABS/nylon 6 alloy for an interior application on the 2006-2007 GM Opel Zafira Tracker SUV. Injection molded components of the 5.9-ft-long overhead console use Terblend N NG-02 (8% glass) and NG-04 (20% glass). The material provides low gloss without paint, heat and scratch resistance, and better acoustic properties (vibration damping) than ABS, PC/ABS, or PP, according to BASF. Though made in Germany, these products are available in the U.S. from BASF Corp., Engineering Plastics, Wyandotte, Mich. An NG-06 grade with 30% glass is also offered. BASF plans to start U.S. production of filled and unfilled Terblend N grades in 2007. Tel: (800) BC-RESIN * PT Direct: 382EH
