INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: COMPLAINTS AGAINST SONY BMG OVER ANTI-PIRACY SOFTWARE.

EFF, which has filed a collective suit in Los Angeles in association with two law firms, is challenging two anti-copying mechanisms which it claims have been installed in more than 25 million CDs sold by the New York-based record company.

Sony BMG recently announced the withdrawal of 4.7 million CDs carrying XCP (Extended Copy Protection) software, acknowledging that the presence of the software leaves computers open to virus attack when such CDs are played on PCs running Windows. EFF claims Sony BMG must now also acknowledge that MediaMax poses problems regarding privacy since "it transmits information on users habits via Internet connections", when CDs are played on computers connected to the Web.
