INNOVATION : EP CALLS FOR PRIORITY BILLING FOR START-UPS AND SMES.

MEPs support the European Commission's proposal to introduce new EU rules on state aid. They believe public subsidies should be targeted at research, experimentation and public/private partnerships and exploit the full innovation potential of SMEs. Aid should nevertheless remain 'exceptional'.

Adopting the own-initiative report by Sophia In't Veld (ALDE, Netherlands) at the end of April, the European Parliament's plenary session welcomed the debate launched by the Commission in September and confirmed at the informal Competitiveness Council in Graz, Austria, on 20 and 21 April (see Europolitics 3073).
