As the European Commission launched its policy strategy on radio frequency identification (RFID) on 15 March at the CeBIT electronics industry fair in Hanover, MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis (ALDE, Germany) told Europolitics of the challenges involved with the use of these smart tags, capable of identifying a person and storing his or her personal data.

What do you think about the self-regulation' approach adopted by the European Commission?

The problem is that the Commission does not have a great deal of competence to propose a regulatory solution. It is proposing an exchange of best practice since radio frequency matters are the responsibility of the member states. It can, however, make proposals on data protection.
