AUDIOVISAL POLICY : COMMISSION TO PROBE TELE2-SFR MERGER.

The European Commission is to take an in-depth look into the proposed US$450 million (339 million) buy-out by SFR France of the fixed telephone and internet business of Tele2 France. The deal, first announced in October 2006, would have "potential anti-competitive effects on pay-TV markets in France," said a Commission statement.

The companies themselves commented, "Tele2 and SFR will analyse the situation arising from the decision made by the European Commission with a view to take a common position on the contemplated transaction shortly".

SFR is jointly owned by French media and telecoms giant Vivendi and UK telecoms group Vodafone. It mainly operates in the mobile phone market. Tele2 France is a subsidiary of Tele2 Europe and provides mobile phone...
