GALILEO : COMMISSION TO PRESENT NEW FINANCIAL OPTIONS IN SEPTEMBER.

The European Commission proposed on 16 May that the deployment phase of the Galileo project be funded with public money, arguing that it is the only realistic solution to move past the current deadlock dominating the European satellite navigation project. The deployment phase includes the manufacture and the launch of 26 satellites (to join the four satellites already launched to test whether the programme would work in orbit), as well as the complete implementation of the system's terrestrial component. It was meant to have been part of a public private partnership (PPP), which the Commission is now proposing to cancel.
