MUSIC INDUSTRY : INDEPENDENT LABELS WANT GUARANTEES AGAINST UNIVERSAL.

The independent record labels are concerned they may not have access to certain repertories being sold by Universal, the major US music firm. Last spring, the European Commission set conditions for the takeover by Universal (Vivendi Group) of the music publishing activity of Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG, Germany). Universal has to sell a number of important Anglo-American copyright catalogues and contracts. The catalogues encompass activities at the level of the European Economic Area (EEA) of Zomba UK, 19 Music, 19 Songs, BBC Music Publishing and Rondor UK, as well as an EEA licence for the Zomba US catalogue.
