TELECOMMUNICATIONS : DIVERGING INTERPRETATIONS OF EU TELECOMS MARKET SITUATION.

Incumbents and new operators on the European telecoms market have vastly different interpretations of the European Commission's 13th progress report on the single European telecoms market, presented on 19 March.

ETNO, the European association representing incumbent operators, sees the continuing increase in competition described in the report as proof that the existing regulations work well. There is consequently no need for new regulatory initiatives. "The real challenge to be taken up today," says ETNO Director Michael Bartholomew, "is to stimulate competition based on infrastructures and to encourage the roll-out of broadband networks".
