Ericsson announced it has signed contracts with Nigeria's three GSM operators Econet, Nitel and MTN, to install turnkey GSM 900 and 1800 networks including switching, radio base stations, new service features, pre-paid and civil works. The contracts span over a period of five years. Specifics of the individual commitments and order values were not released.

Against a backdrop of scarce and unreliable fixed line services, Nigeria has accumulated a huge demand for better telecommunications. With 125 million inhabitants and an expected 5 -10 million subscribers in the next five years, Nigeria is potentially the largest market in Africa and constitutes a significant percentage of the continent's telecom business. -(World IT Report)
