MEXICO: IMF SAYS MEXICO CAN GET CREDIT LINE OF US$16.4 BILLION.

Mexico qualifies for an IMF credit line of as much as US$16.4 billion under an IMF program which is available to countries with solid finances, even though Mexico's economy has slowed down. Claudio Loser, the director of the IMF's Western Hemisphere department, stated that Mexico is the only country to have sought a contingent credit line.

This was a program introduced by the IMF over two years ago in order to support economies before they reach the situation where they are unable to pay their debts. In the first 18 months, no countries sought a contingent credit line. The fund therefore overhauled its guidelines last year and made loans faster to obtain and cheaper to access. Claudio Loser stated that the Mexican economy is unlikely to grow at all this year....
