Telefonica Celular, the Brazilian mobile operator, has launched a CDMA2000 1X high-speed data and voice network in Brazil using equipment supplied by Lucent Technologies, the US-based telecommunications equipment provider. The new network will initially provide data transmission speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps) to Telefonica Celular's customers in Rio de Janeiro.

These increased speeds will enable Telefonica Celular to offer its customers advanced services such as video streaming, which makes full-motion video transmission possible, wireless Web browsing and instant messaging.
