INDIA: HCL INFINET & NET2PHONE TO MAKE IP PHONES IN INDIA.(Brief Article)

HCL Infinet, the Delhi-based ISP subsidiary of HCL Infosystems, the Indian software and hardware solutions company, has announced that it has joined up with Net2Phone, the Internet telephony technology company, in order to manufacture internet protocol telephones in India. The company plans to start manufacturing by October 2002 or November 2002 and expects the internet telephony business to generate at least 250 million rupees (US$5.1 million) in its first year of operations, according to the Business Standard.

The company stated that it expects that the phones manufactured in India would be at least 33% cheaper, compared with those imported, as local manufacturing would help it avoid import duty and countervailing duty (CVD). The agreement stipulates that HCL...
