As of August, Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) will begin the operation of its optical fiber network, which among other things will allow its users to access Internet using broadband. Arely Castellon, VP and general manager for Ciena Latin America, company in charge of the construction of the telephone network, said in an interview with Grupo Reforma that this technology also reduces the complexity of the network since it work in an automated intelligent way without the need of manual intervention like it is normally done with the traditional networks.

The network will be the first in Latin America of these characteristics and will begin to operate as of August. Ciena develop systems of intelligent optical networks and software for integrated communication networks....
