MALAYSIA: MOODY'S ON MALAYSIAN BANKS.(Further consolidation in Malaysia's banking systems may soon unfold)(Brief Article)

Moody's Investors Service says that recent market developments indicate that further consolidation in Malaysia's banking systems may soon unfold. Over the long term, the process will strengthen the banking system due to the consequent reduction in the number of competitors, the evolution of more prudent pricing and the creation of institutions with greater critical mass.

"But in the short term, a heightened level of competition is expected because of a more liberalized operating environment and ensuing competition from foreign banks," the rating agency says in a just-released Special Comment on the Malaysian banking system.
