A-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted a notice published in mid-April 2005 by the Saudi Arabian Transportation Ministry announcing the bid proposed by the Siemens Company to sell new train engines powered by diesel or electricity. The new train engines can travel at 200 kilometers per hour. This proposal was given to Transportation Minister Dr.

Jabara bin Ayid a-Suraysari, in the tender to build 480 kilometers of railroad tracks, eighty kilometers of which connect Mecca and Jeddah.
