HONG KONG: ACTION PROPOSED AGAINST'TAXI' VANS.

According to news.gov.hk: Proposals to deter vans from carrying paying passengers will be studied, the Transport Department says, adding an open stance isadopted towards suggestions on the issue. In a meeting with the taxi trade today, the department listened to their views over a survey conducted earlier by the Polytechnic University on the operation of goods vehicles and the report's suggestions.

Under the Road Traffic Ordinance, vans can only be used to carry goods.Any van driver that carries a paying passenger faces penalties of up to six months jail and a $10,000 fine. The department and the Airport Authority andPoliceformed a special task force last July to look into illegal transport activities and touting. Exchanges with the transport trade will continue...
