ALGERIA: ALGERIAN-RUSSIAN GAS ALLIANCE BEING DISCUSSED.

According to online press (April 27, 2006), Gazprom, the dominant supplier of natural gas to northern Europe from Russia, and Sonatrach, the dominant supplier of natural and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to southern Europe from Algeria, have begun detailed planning for a new business alliance.
Natalia Bortsova, a gas industry analyst in Moscow, said: "Gazprom has serious intention to produce liquified natural gas but currently has no production facilities of its own". She said the technology required was readily available but Gazprom acknowledged that Sonatrach had considerable experience in building LNG plants, operating them and marketing the product.
