When London International Group launched its mate PU condom, the Durex Avanti, in 1994 in the US, it was the first such condom in the world. Five years on, the PU condom has achieved wide acceptance and competitors are entering the market.

Two new polyurethane condoms have appeared on the market this year to compete with the Avanti, which LIG (now SSL International) spent 10 years and more than $20 million developing.

Market researchers Frost & Sullivan predict that PU condoms will take 5 percent by value of the US condom market this year, and 17.5 percent by 2002 (see Table). This high potential, plus the need to offer a latex-free alternative, has prompted competition.
