Polyurethanes gaining in coatings market as EU solvent deadline looms. (coatings developments).

Urethanes Technology, June, 2003 by White, Liz

Despite a, "roughly stagnant" coatings market recently, polyurethane-based materials have seen growth, at the expense of other materials, according to Dr Ulrich Meier-Westhues, vice president of coatings business development with Bayer Polymers AG.

And he sees this as "not surprising" because the coatings world is shifting away from traditional solvent-based alkyd resins or low/medium solids conventional systems towards water-borne, very high solids systems, powder coatings, or UV-curing systems.

In this shift, he said, polyurethane chemistry otters a lot of tools to play with, in terms of its molecular structure. "The possibilities are much higher compared with other chemistries," the Bayer coatings expert emphasised.
