CPSC backs fire standard: US consumer body to set standards for mattress fire safety.(newslines)(Consumer Product Safety Commission)

WASHINGTON DC -- The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted 21 Dec to set up a nationwide safety standard requiring mattresses to resist ignition from open flame. It also voted to start developing a separate safety standard on flammability of bedclothes such as blankets, duvets and pillows.

The proposal for the mattress standard--well in advance of the 1 June 2005 deadline set by the regulators--will be published in the US Federal Register requesting public comment for a period of 75 days. An opportunity for oral testimony will also be scheduled, CPSC added.
