Cutting-edge technologies and the increasing value of light crude oil products have triggered new investments in Alberta, Canada's oil sand extraction industry that will lead to a doubling of industry output in the 21st century. Technical improvements have enabled oil sand extraction to become a major part of Canada's energy industry where it accounts for 13% of all Canadian oil produced and furnishes enough oil to provide 17% of that nation's petroleum requirements.
