Inside Washington: restoring funding for port security.(Update)
Marine Log, April, 2004
Port security may just get some desperately needed federal funding after all. Senator Barbara Boxer (D.-Calif.) last month introduced the United States Seaport Multiyear Security Enhancement Act (S. 2240) to improve seaport security. The measure is now in the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. Whether it will get much further remains to be seen.
Senator Boxer's $800 million seems quite generous given that the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) estimates that $400 million of funding is needed for 2005.
