William O. Bailey, the former president, chief operating officer and vice chairman of health insurer Aetna Inc. and the former chief executive officer and chairman of MBIA Inc., who helped pioneer the financial guarantee industry, has died of pneumonia. He was 78.
Bailey was Aetna's president and COO from 1976 to 1987 and the company's vice chairman from 1987 to 1988.
Bailey most recently was chairman, CEO and president of Terra Nova Holdings in Bermuda and Terra Nova Reinsurance Ltd., London.
