* ROBERT E. GALLAGHER, chairman of insurance broker ARTHUR J. GALLAGHER & CO., died Aug. 30.

Gallagher, 83, joined his father's insurance agency in 1947 after graduating from Cornell University. He was named president and CEO of the company in 1963. The company went public in 1984, and he was elected chairman in 1990. He would remain chairman until his death, though he retired as CEO in 1995. He was active in other areas of the insurance industry as well, serving as director and president of the Insurance Institute of America for several terms.

* AIR FORCE BRIG. GEN. ROBERT FRANCIS MCDERMOTT, the former chairman of multiline insurer USAA, died Aug. 28.

McDermott, 86, joined USAA as executive vice president in 1968, becoming president in 1969...
