Decades of efforts by the insurance industry and advocacy groups have increased automobile safety significantly, according to a new study by the Washington D.C-based American Insurance Association.

Recently released federal highway data show a continuing drop in motor vehicle fatality rates over the 40-year period from 1966 to 2006, as well as a decline in injuries, AIA said. The statistics also show that these declines are happening even as Americans take to the road in ever-increasing numbers.

For example, Americans drove nearly 3 trillion miles in 2006, compared to one trillion miles in 1966. Over those 40 years, the motor vehicle traffic fatality rate dropped to a record low 1.42 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2006, from 5.50...
