W.R. BERKLEY CORP. has named WILLIAM J. JOHNSTON as president of CLERMONT SPECIALTY MANAGERS LTD., one of the Greenwich, Conn.-based holding company's member subsidiaries.

Johnston succeeds ALFRED SCHONBERGER, who will go on to serve as the Hackensack, N.J.-based underwriter's chairman and chief executive officer, a company statement said.

The company also has promoted DAVID GIANFRANCESCO, Clermont's current senior vice president in charge of claims, to executive vice president, the company said.
