Venturing into videos

In December 1988, Florida businessman David Ehlers brought the Blockbuster Video chain to Oahu's shores. On an island where the typical video store crammed about 500 titles into a space of 1,000 square feet or less, Blockbuster's superstore concept raised some eyebrows.

It also raised interest among Island residents, who flocked to the chain's 6,000-square-foot outlet in Waipahu and its 7,000-square-foot store in the Ala Moana Plaza. Although Blockbuster's regional manager had projected combined revenues of about $700,000 for the first year, sales actually exceeded $1 million at the Waipahu store alone, and are expected to top $2 million at the Ala Moana location.
