Is Honolulu's longtime mayor really a champion of the little guy, or simply the consummate political animal?

The attack was vintage Frank Fasi. In late January, one week after a blistering federal critique of Honolulu's aging sewage collection system became public, the mayor of the City and County of Honolulu held a press conference in which he excoriated the local news media for accentuating the negative while ignoring a positive study giving Honolulu's environment high marks. "We are told," said Fasi in a characteristic combination of anger, sarcasm and injured dignity, "that we at the city and county don't appear to care what's happening."

Supporters of Fasi saw the press conference as a justifiable response by the mayor to continued unfair local media...
