When famed industrialist Henry Kaiser retired to Hawaii in 1958, he saw a need for affordable, prepaid, quality health care. Soon after arriving, he started the Kaiser Permanente Hawaii Region. Some of Kaiser's earliest supporters included labor unions such as the ILWU, Local 5, and building trade organizations. Kaiser Permanente's success springs from a joint endeavor between the professions of business and medicine. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group Inc., are a part of this cooperative program.
